My Family Photo Review. Our Family Photoshoot Experience...

Time flies by so quickly when you're a parent. It's important to capture the moments as they unfold before you with lots of photographs because, just as the saying goes, childhood really does pass by in the blink of an eye.

We have two teenagers in our home already and I always find myself thinking when and how did that happen? It seems like just yesterday, that they were each slobbering little babies, rolling about on the floor. It's hard to accept that two of our children are now taller than me!

While writing this website provides me with ample opportunities to photograph my growing family, it's not always easy to get pictures that capture all of the kids in the one image. Impossible still, is a keepsake image of the whole family together in a portrait setting that is of heirloom quality: Natural and beautiful.

It's been exactly eight years since we scheduled our last family portrait and that's way too long. Our second-last child was only six months old at the time. We booked a session at one of those shopping centre photography studios for our first professional family portrait shoot. It was all a bit unnatural and stressful to be honest. The session was timed and the photographer seemed a bit clueless as to our expectations. (Hello horrendous prop suggestions. No thank you.)

Our resulting images were expensive and not that great in the end, which was disappointing to say the least. Still, we have them and cherish them, but looking back, we could have had a much better capture of our children's early years and overall experience.

When I was approached by My Family Photo, to try out their far more natural approach to family portraiture, I jumped at the chance. Eight years has changed our family immensely and seen an addition to it as well. It was time to capture our family as it is now. All eight of us as we are with no unnatural props, odd expressions or results.

Our photographic experience with My Family Photo was incredibly easy from start to finish. We booked online. Our date, time and location were all confirmed via email promptly. Our photographic shoot was organised to take place at the beautiful Williamstown Botanic Gardens. (One of several Melbourne locations on offer.) All we had to do was arrive a few minutes earlier than our scheduled session time of 30 minutes and meet with our photographer. (Kate.)

Kate couldn't have handled our family better and we were so impressed with her relaxed approach and our resulting images. Our kids giggled and jostled their way through our session, especially when they were given the chance to climb on their parents without protest (which they loved). They smiled truly natural smiles and we genuinely feel as if these images have captured the lightness of their childhood and the love in our family.

Please believe me when I say I can actually see the natural personality of each family member shining through in every image. This is the hallmark professional result that everyone seeks when looking for a great family portrait photographer. My Family Photo totally nailed it.

We wanted a mother and 'daughters' image and our needs were met - we love this one!

Kate and her assistant readily listened to our needs and wants and gave us our yearned-for natural results.

Handling a family of eight is no easy feat at any time. Our six kids were crazy-excited and bolted off to play ball between each capture and I can see their healthy energy and excitement from their day at the gardens, reflected in our keepsake photographic collection. This experience couldn't have been more different to the constraints of the studio setting eight years earlier. In fact it was much more fun!

Behind the scenes - complete chaos!

The day was perfect and the kids produced nothing but themselves when it came to the business of capturing the moment.

From surprising places, come the most beautiful of images. Kate snaps our youngest in an ivy-covered tree trunk, producing this beautiful image for us to treasure.

One of my favourite shots of all, is this image of our six children. It's a perfect and extremely rare capture of our kids as they are and a bonus that they're all looking at the camera too!

On-location photographic sessions of thirty minutes duration cost just $165 and this includes 15 edited hi-res images of your choice of black and white or colour or a combination of both. Images are available for viewing online via a private link provided by My Family Photo, around a week after your shoot. From here, just select the images you wish to receive and they will be posted to you on a USB. It couldn't be simpler.

My Family Photo's approach provided us with a completely hassle-free method of creating memories. In the end, I found it too hard to select just 15 images and I wound-up buying the entire shoot on USB for only $150! (This is way less than I paid eight years ago for inferior images.)

From here, I plan on sharing our family's pictures with friends and family members, plus making up some fantastic canvases for our walls.

If it's time for your own family to head to the photographers for an updated collection, we can't recommend My Family Photo enough. My Family Photo operate in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. They are also available for private shoots. To learn more or make a booking, visit their website, or call 1300 95 99 95. 1. It does go so fast! My third born turns 12 tomorrow - possibly my favourite age. I will be making the most of him for the next 12 months before the teens hit.

  3. You are so right when you say it's importnat to capture the moments before they disappear. Time flies by sometimes you turn around and 6 months are gone. You have a gorgeous family and the phtos are very beautiful. They truly made a great job!!! #TwinklyTuesday Frenchie Mummy https://thefrenchiemummy.com/

    1. Thank you Cecile. (Beautiful name by the way.) I agree. Time flies, especially when they are very little and you are so tired from birth and baby stages.

  4. I prefer it so much more when photographers give you the images on usb, it's so much easier to get them printed as needed then. I really should organise another family shoot soon as our last one was when bub was 6 months old. #teamIBOT

    1. I agree. A USB gives you complete freedom to share and store as you wish. They don't take up any room either.

    1. The gardens were beautiful and we totally fluked the weather on the day. I especially love how the sunlight has been captured in everyone's hair.

  6. Oh I love them. Just gorgeous! I like the natural look much better than studio numbers. I think it's important to capture moments together as a family and yet we don't have a family photo of all five of us because we just can't get the boys to comply. I think it might take a professional!

  20. Great idea getting a professional photographer - we hardly have any good family shots, and they're never with ALL of us in the photo! I might organise this for my hubby's upcoming birthday! Thanks for the inspiration! (-8

  24. I love having professional photos taken and I think that these style of photographs are the best! I have some gorgeous shots of my sister and I taken at the park with our babies - I will always cherish them. It's crazy that I now have two little people who aren't in any of those photos {just means I need to book another session}.

  25. That's fantastic. We did one once that was great - we keep saying we should do it again as the photos are missing a family member and the 12 year old was just 6 weeks old....
